Funny Story About Off Site Storage
by ChristaI am almost embarrassed to say out loud that as a Vancouver based professional organizer, I have off site storage. John and I currently live in a very small home, (950 square feet) and so we have no room for our Christmas decorations and some other items important to us. So when we moved to Vancouver we had to give in and get off sitestorage. Did I really say that out loud?
Recently something funny happened that reminded me why off site storage is just silly. Its been very hot this summer in Vancouver and no one has air conditioning so 100 degrees means many restless nights. I have been looking everywhere for one of those tall fans and every store was sold out. I didn’t want to buy a fan if it wasn’t the one I really wanted so we just suffered with our ceiling fan and a small room fan. Then we had to go to storage to pick up John’s golf clubs, which he uses every couple of years. What do you know when we opened our storage unit, we have a fan. No it was not the tall one I want, but it was a fan! We had one and didn’t even no it.
The moral of this story is avoid off site storage as best you can because you forget what’s there and don’t use it anyway. If you have a small space like we do, get off site storage if you must for seasonal and other important, but infrequently used items. But know what’s in your storage and promise me you won’t put something there just because you can’t let go.

I chuckled when I read this. I guess we should all make lists of what we put into off-site storage. The scary part is, I’ve done this too with items in my own basement!
